Cross-Stitch Chart Specifications
A reviewable cross stitch chart design must define more than a colored grid. It should state the stitch dimensions, ground fabric assumption, fabric count, stitching convention, nominal finished size, legend fields, stitch notation, navigation features, and intended output.
These fields depend on one another. Fabric count changes nominal dimensions, while a symbol change can affect monochrome readability. Fractional stitches may require enlarged details or a focused stitched sample.

What the Chart Specification Must Control

- Stitch direction where direction changes interpretation

- Grid divisions, center references, coordinates, and page joins
- Intended print scale, screen format, and monochrome behavior
- Enlarged details for dense or ambiguous regions
- Questions requiring a focused stitched sample
- Source and rights records, without treating those records as a rights determination
The chart does not need every possible field. It needs each field that could change how this motif is counted, interpreted, sampled, or handed off.
Separate Stitch Dimensions From Finished Dimensions
Chart dimensions count stitch positions. Physical dimensions depend on the material and stitching convention applied to those positions.
- Stitch width: chart positions across
- Stitch height: chart positions down
- Nominal finished width: calculated physical width of the stitched design
- Nominal finished height: calculated physical height of the stitched design
Do not record “design size” without a unit. A value such as “140 × 173” is incomplete unless it identifies stitches, millimetres, centimetres, or inches.
Nominal Finished Size Calculation
Under a one-stitch-per-position assumption, divide each stitch dimension by the effective stitch positions per inch.
Nominal width in inches = stitch width ÷ effective stitch positions per inch
Nominal height in inches = stitch height ÷ effective stitch positions per inch
For example, an editorial chart measuring 196 by 140 stitches on 14 stitch positions per inch calculates to 14 by 10 inches. In metric units, that is approximately 35.56 by 25.4 centimetres.
These figures are nominal calculations, not measurements from a stitched sample.
Fabric Count and Over-Thread Convention
Fabric count must be read alongside fabric construction and the over-thread convention. A nominal thread count does not necessarily equal completed stitches per inch.
On 28-thread-per-inch evenweave, stitching over one produces 28 stitch positions per inch. Stitching over two produces 14. The same 196 by 140 stitch chart therefore calculates to 7 by 5 inches over one or 14 by 10 inches over two.
Record the convention explicitly. “28-count fabric” alone does not define finished size.
Manufacturer documentation can identify the stated construction or count of a named product. Confirm the specification for that product rather than extending it to every fabric with a similar label.
Stitched Size Is Not Cut-Fabric Size
Nominal stitched dimensions describe the design area. Cut-fabric dimensions add the margin required for handling, mounting, or another defined finishing process.
Keep nominal stitched size, finishing allowance, and calculated cut-fabric size in separate fields. The allowance is a project decision, not part of the stitch-count calculation.
Cross-Stitch Chart Legend Fields
A legend is the chart’s local decoding system. It maps each visible mark to the thread and stitch instructions required to interpret it.

If a conversion has been used, record its source. Treat the converted code as a reference rather than an exact material match unless a physical comparison supports that conclusion.
One Symbol, One Defined Meaning
A symbol has no fixed meaning outside its chart key. An X, dot, triangle, open square, or diagonal mark can represent different instructions in different charts.
Define every mark locally. If one thread is used for several stitch types, provide separate rows or make the stitch distinction explicit.
Review Symbol Legibility in the Delivered Output
Color and symbol information should work together. A chart understood only through color may become ambiguous when printed in monochrome or viewed under low-contrast conditions.
Inspect the intended output size, not only the editable chart view.
Shape and Contrast
Compare filled and open shapes, rotated versions of one mark, dots and short lines, thin crosses and diagonals, and symbols distinguished by minor internal details. Similarity is a review flag, particularly where the associated colors meet within the motif.
Check each symbol against light and dark cell fills. Grid lines must remain visible without competing with stitch marks, backstitch paths, or navigation references.
Monochrome Review
- Confirm that every legend symbol remains distinct.
- Trace pale and dark color roles without relying on fill color.
- Inspect fractional orientation and backstitch separation.
- Keep center references and page boundaries identifiable.

Backstitch, Knots, and Blends
A backstitch line needs a legend entry with its thread reference, strand count, and controlled path. Check its endpoints, intersections, color changes, page continuity, and separation from grid lines.
Knot notation should identify thread, strand count, placement, and any controlled wrap instruction. For blends, record every component instead of replacing the thread references with a descriptive color name.
A less common stitch needs a defined symbol and, when interpretation could change, a separate construction diagram. Do not assume the charting software can represent every required variation.
Choose Navigation Features by Counting Need
Navigation references help a stitcher maintain position across repeated symbols, blank spans, and multi-page layouts. They are useful controls, not compulsory decoration.

- Horizontal and vertical center references
- Row and column numbers
- Page coordinates and match points
- Clearly identified overlap areas

Center References and Blank Spans
A center mark identifies a location; it does not prescribe where stitching must begin. For even dimensions, the mathematical center lies between positions. For odd dimensions, it passes through a central position.
Long blank spans may need coordinates or stronger major grid lines. An isolated mark is not automatically an error, but its location should be compared with the source motif and adjacent chart coordinates.
Page Joins
Review multi-page continuity in the assembled output as well as on individual pages. Inspect page order, numbering, overlap treatment, clipped symbols, backstitch endpoints, fractional marks, and grid alignment.

When a Stitched Sample Is Necessary
Sampling should answer a named question. “Test the design” is too broad to guide a useful review.
A focused sample is appropriate for dense fractional regions, uncertain strand coverage, direction-sensitive boundaries, blended threads, small details, isolated marks, or a ground fabric not represented by an existing sample.
- At this finished size, does the eye detail remain distinguishable?
- On the intended ground fabric, can the quarter-stitch placement be worked as drawn?
- In this stitched sample, does the backstitch separate the adjacent color areas?
- Does the stated strand count provide the intended coverage on this named fabric?
- Does the upper-leg direction need to be controlled in this section?
- Can the isolated accent be positioned without another navigation reference?
Record the fabric product, count, over-thread convention, thread references, strand counts, sample dimensions, and departures from the chart. Limit the conclusion to what that sample shows.
Common Specification Mix-Ups
“The design is 200 × 150.”
State whether those values are stitches or physical units.
“Use 28-count fabric.”
Add the fabric construction and over-one or over-two convention.
“The finished size is 14 × 10 inches.”
Identify the fabric assumption and keep cut-fabric dimensions separate.
“Use the standard symbols.”

The handoff is reviewable when another reader can reconstruct the assumptions, trace each mark to an instruction, repeat the dimensional calculation, and identify what remains untested.
